Data
Data sources
What our tools and directory pages are built on, how the data is checked, and the limits you should know about.
Airports
Our airport list comes from OurAirports, an open, public-domain dataset. From it we keep the 5,332 airports with an IATA code that are classed as large or medium airports, or that are small but have scheduled passenger service. Heliports, seaplane bases, private airfields and closed airports are left out. 5,189 of them also have an ICAO code. Where the source has no valid ICAO code we show none, rather than guessing.
When the source lists a district rather than the city an airport serves (for example Islamabad International under “Attock”), we correct the city by hand and record why. These corrections are kept to a short, documented list.
Airlines
The airline search covers 1,011 active airlines with a valid ICAO code. 40 widely flown airlines have been checked by hand, including their codes and main airports. The rest come from the OpenFlights community database, which is no longer updated often, so we label them as community data and never build airline pages from them. Airlines known to have stopped flying are removed. We don’t show fleets, alliances or operating status.
Time zones
Each airport’s IANA time zone (for example Asia/Karachi) is looked up from its coordinates when the dataset is built. Offsets and daylight-saving rules then come from your browser’s built-in time-zone database, so local times stay current.
Distances and routes
Distances are great-circle distances calculated from airport coordinates with the haversine formula. A route page describes an airport pair: it never claims that airlines fly it nonstop, because we don’t use schedule data.
